An Inspiring Talk to Aspiring Designers

Istituto Marangoni are one of the biggest fashion and design institutions worldwide and are one of my wonderful, regular clients.  I’ve photographed hundreds of new graduates at the end of their education, ready to take on the world with their visions for womenswear, menswear and interior design.

Throughout the year the school hosts talks from leaders in the fashion world and recently Sir Paul Smith was one of them.  I can’t begin to tell you what a treat it was listening to this British icon and hearing the story of his journey from humble roots to global success.

His early days when he was grafting in his tiny, tiny shop to make a living he’d build in time during the week to be creative – that was non-negotiable.  Precious time to innovate and push the boundaries of design, down to the smallest details.  Anyone who works in a creative field understands the balance that needs to exist between being commercial and doing something different that stands out.

In just an hour, I learned so much from his life: think laterally; graft; the details matter; embrace craftsmanship.
